“The earth laughs in flowers.”

It’s easy to take the plant world for granted. It’s just always there, going about its business, seemingly passive and oblivious to the comings and goings of people and other animals.  Resilient, silent and unconcerned.

But take a closer look.  Scratch the surface a little, and you’ll find an intricate web of pulsating, thriving, intense life, with endless diversity, communicating in ways we’ve yet to understand, fighting for every advantage to grow, succeed, be strong and prosper.

Plants are the epitome of magic.  They take air, water, sunlight and a few minerals and convert it all to a life-giving energy that provides the foundation for civilizations and sustenance for an entire planet.  While we may begin to understand the processes involved, we fall far from appreciating the motivations behind it all.  Magic indeed.

There’s a sentiment that it’s hard to go wrong when taking photographs of flowers, sunsets and kittens…they start out with so much to offer.  But I know from bitter experience that it’s still quite easy to mess it up. Here are a few images that capture a little of the essence I’ve found in plant life.
